Growing up in the 1970's my favorite summer treats were Coke floats, red/white/blue Bomb Pops from our neighborhood ice cream truck and two scoops of vanilla chocolate chip in a cone from High's Ice Cream Shop @ Towers Mall. Although my local (Roanoke) High's Ice Cream closed decades ago, Tom's Ice Cream Bowl (1950) has survived to become a local Zanesville institution. Tom's makes their own ice cream in-house with Emery-Thompson ice cream machines (Made in the USA). Joe Baker (Tom's ice cream maker) has made over 592,000 gallons of ice cream since he first started @ Tom's. In their peak summer season, the "Bowl" makes 2,000 gallons of ice cream every month. They craft their 12% butterfat ice cream in small batches, 10 gallons @ a time. Some of the flavors that are unique to Tom's are: caramel chocolate brownie, red raspberry grand, Rum Raisin, cinnamon and gingerbread. The Bowl's best sellers are vanilla, mint chocolate chip and cookie dough. They also have Boston Coolers (vanilla ice cream and root beer) and White House ice cream, so named because it was President Andrew Jackson's favorite (vanilla ice cream and cherries). My vanilla shake from a stainless mixer was very good. Besides the Bowl's great ice cream they also have candy and nuts and they sell about 12 tons of candy and 6 tons of nuts around Christmas time. The cashews are their best seller. Enjoy!
