The Dog House, High Point, NC

The Dog House has been in this, its original location, since 1942. They have a back entrance and they do have bathrooms. You can park on the street out in front of the place, near the back entrance or in our case, being that it was Saturday, in the nearby BB&T lot. Inside you will find a long low counter with 11 short black original stools and 7 small original booths. Each booth is dedicated to one of the seven original ACC teams; Virginia, Duke, UNC, Clemson, Maryland, NC State and Wake Forest. The owner is a big ACC fan. The buns are steamed and the hotdogs are boiled. The dogs can also be grilled. The service is incredibly fast and friendly. My excellent loaded dog came with mustard, onions, slaw and chili. The slaw and chili are both homemade. They have Cheerwine, but it's only available in cans. At times, this place can get really busy because they are only open from 11:00am-2:30pm Monday-Saturday. When the line stretches out the door, the owner may come to your table and yell at you to get up or to get moving so that others can be served. The local students, usually the ones being yelled at, get a big kick out of the owner doing this.
