Do you love mud? If you do, the Sterling drive-in in Welch is a great place to be the first weekend in October. You can grab some excellent food and watch the mud covered ATV’s take over the town while they make their way between the Hatfield-McCoy trailheads. At lunchtime, droves of riders converged at Sterling’s. Mud-covered quad ATV’s were lined up on Route 16 ten or more back waiting to turn left into the drive-in. There they would join rows of ATV’s already parked. A totally mud covered ATV is really a beautiful sight and you know the riders had fun doing it. OK, now to the food. The dogs were grilled and they were topped with chili, onions, sweet slaw and mustard. The buns were split top and they were toasted on both sides. My slaw-dogs were excellent! The Sterling drive-in has been in Welch West Virginia since 1945. For curb service just flash your lights. They are closed on Monday. Otherwise, they are open daily Sun-Thursday 9am – 11pm & Fri-Sat 9am-midnight. And they do take VISA. Note: This year 2007, the National Trailfest on the Hatfield-McCoy Trails took place between October 4th-8th. The dates may change for 2008. See www.nationaltrailfest.com for current 2020 info.
