In Kentucky, Owensboro to be precise, mutton is king and Moonlite Bar-B-Q cooks and sells more mutton than any other place in the country. Why is mutton so popular in the Owensboro area? It's because the early Welsh settlers to the region had large herds of sheep and if all you have is sheep then mutton is what's for dinner. Early Roman Catholic events also served mutton because it was donated by the parishioners. The local Catholic Church still has a yearly mutton barbeque fundraising event. The large (present day) local German population and their heritage also help to keep alive the mutton tradition. Like the mutton, Moonlite also pit-cooks their pork butts over hickory logs. I had a very good pork sandwich topped with pickles and a full onion slice accompanied by a side of excellent sweet slaw, very good baked beans and a few pieces of their mutton barbeque with a cup of their famous Burgoo. Basically Burgoo is like Brunswick stew but with mutton instead of pork and it's a little spicier than normal b-stew. Like the Burgoo, the mutton is also an acquired taste, one that I would have trouble acquiring, but I am glad that I had the chance for the first time ever to try them both and my foodie knowledge will be forever broadened because of it. Thanks Moonlite!
