The first time I went to Melvin's was on a vacation to Charleston about twenty years ago. Melvin's and a few motels were about the only things out here (Mt. Pleasant) at the time. Route 17 was desolate and there were'nt any sweet-grass basket vendors linning the roadside like today. Food, smells and tastes can be incredibly powerful memory makers so when I was in the area recently my first stop was of course Melvin's. Melvin's pit-cooks/smokes their Boston Butts over oak and hickory for 18-24hours. My pulled-pork, slaw-topped sandwich with an extra pour of Melvin's heavenly original golden secret Q sauce was just as oustanding as I had remembered it to be. Melvin Bessinger may not have created South Carolina's first 1700's era mustard-based sauce, but in 1939 he did perfect it. The sweet-tea is also excellent. Enjoy Melvin's and Charleston!
