Southern Pit Bar-B-Que (locally known as McGhin's) is located in the city limits of Griffin. Finding it for the first time however can be somewhat difficult, but it's well worth the effort. Here are some tips. @ The turnoff look for the Georgia lawn equipment sign, McGhin's does have a sign there, but it's small and hard to notice (see photo). Drive up the hill and follow the road to the left and then down the other side of the hill to the Southern Pit parking area. McGhin's pit-cooks bone-in hams over a mix of hardwoods. Everything from the hand-cut fries to the Brunswick stew is made fresh daily. I had the chopped pork plate, baked beans, slaw, Brunswick stew and a triangle wedge of cornbread along with some very good sweet tea. The already sauced chopped pork was tender and full of excellent flavor. The beans, along with the triangle cornbread, stew and the finely chopped sweet neon green topped with a pickle slaw, were all superb. The sweet brown Q sauce (mild& hot) is vinegar and spice based and the slaw sauce is mayo based. Both were excellent.
They are open Wednesday-Saturday. They close @ 8:00pm Wednesday & Thursday and close @ 9:00pm on Friday & Saturday. Enjoy!
