Another excellent Winston-Salem Q house is Hill's Lexington Barbecue. Hill's pit-cooks its pork shoulders over hickory wood coals and the sauce, hushpuppies, slaw and banana pudding are still made from the original family recipes. Hill's has remained a family owned and operated business since 1951. I had their sliced Q plate with baked beans, red slaw, hushpuppies and sweet tea with lemon slices. My sliced Q was superb-tender enough to cut with a fork. If you need extra Q sauce they will bring it to your table already warmed. Their brownish vinegar Q sauce was fantastic and it complemented my sliced Q perfectly. The red slaw and the hushpuppies were excellent and I couldn't resist soaking pup after pup in that great sauce, although they are also great by themselves. Good sweet tea too. At this point in the meal I was happily stuffed but I do regret not being able to try their banana pudding. Well, that's what return visits are for. Besides the great food, Hill's Lexington Barbecue is also open on Sundays. Enjoy!
I was at Hill's only once, one of my first experiences with North Carolina barbecue. I loved it. Unfortunately it has permanently closed.
