Salem is one of Virginia's best small towns. It's home to Roanoke College and the Minor League Salem Red Sox (the Boston Red Sox farm team). Recently, after years of renovation, the 1910 building that once housed an iconic corner neighborhood general store, is now open and ready for business. The building, inside and out, looks amazing and the 100+ year old oak floors still move and creak just as they should. The shelves are stocked with Virginia's Finest in addition to candy, snacks, drinks, local beers, wine, and Route 11 Potato Chips . Stop by for some cupcakes, a couple of hot-dogs with some outstandingly good relish and some of the best ice cream you will find. I got a scoop of vanilla and Tennessee Toffee and both were great! A week later, I returned for two pints of the same as last, two amazing hot-dogs (this time) topped with chili, onions, relish and mustard, plus a (hard-to-find) four bottle (pack) of Stewart's Cream Soda. The hot-dogs here are some of the best in the state! Enjoy!
