Opened in 1956, the Charcoal Pit (a Wilmington, Delaware institution) is the original home of the ¼ lb. hamburger. All of the "Pit's" burgers are cooked to order, their beef is fresh, never frozen and it's ground daily. My superb charbroiled cheeseburger (cooked to medium) was topped with fried onions, pickles, mustard, ketchup and their amazing relish. A small bowl of pickles comes with your burger and the mustard and ketchup are on the table. My vanilla shake, made with Jack & Jill ice cream in a stainless-steel mixer cup, was wonderful. With no state sales tax, low liquor prices (compared to Virginia) and great burgers and shakes from the Charcoal Pit, exploring Delaware may not be as boring as you may think. Enjoy!
