Bill Spoon opened his Q house in 1963 and this Queen City institution continues Bill's legacy with the current owner Steve Spoon (Bill's Grandson). Family owned and operated, Bills' has been smoking eastern N.C. style Q for over 45 years. Bill's cooks the whole hog with hickory in a Nunnery-Freeman electric Kook Rite Kooker (Mecklenburg County laws and regulations stopped wood-burning, open-fired cooking pits). I got a small finely chopped Q plate with baked beans, slaw and a very good sweet tea. My mustard slaw was excellent, and the Q was very good (it was even better with their vinegar and spice based sauce). The baked beans and light & crispy puppies were also very good. I also sampled some great banana pudding and one of the most outstanding pieces of sweet potato pie I have ever had. Bill Spoon's Q house is in South Charlotte, 6 miles from downtown Charlotte, very close to I-77 and it's on the Blue-Line. Enjoy!
I liked Bill Spoon's the couple of of times I was there. Unfortunately, they are another one that has permanently closed.
