Bill's is take-out only with no inside seating available. You can snag a spot on the street out in front of the place even @ lunchtime. Open the red screen door and let it slam behind you. Move up in the line until you reach the hole in the acrylic panel. They will only ask for your order when they have totally finished with the customer in front of you, and not before, as I found out. With the exception of some drinks and a few non-homemade deserts, Bill's really only sells hotdogs, the nuclear red ones. The buns are steamed and the dogs are cooked in a shallow pan of hot bubbling grease. The dogs are not deep fried, but they are cooked in grease. Bill's hotdogs are topped with a slap of mustard, a spoonful of onions and a spoonful of Bill's famous chili. I had two dogs with everything and they were both very good. Bill's has been a Washington landmark since 1928. And yes, the staff behind the counter did radiate their traditional rudeness, abrasiveness, gruffness and overall sense of non-warmth. Enjoy the dogs, the water and Cecil B DeMilles' boyhood hometown.
