Up until the 1990's, general aviation pilots would frequently use the grass landing strip behind the drive-in to stop by for their $100 dollar hamburger fix. A $100 dollar hamburger is pilot slang for the approximate cost of operating a private light aircraft (Cessna Skyhawk), including fuel, on a round trip flight to a nearby airport. Ironically, Bridgestone built an aircraft tire plant where the grass strip once was. Today, the field beside the drive-in is still a popular landing site, not for the planes, but for the helicopters. The Airport Drive-In, a local Mayodan favorite since 1964, is family owned and operated. I had the fries and a grilled nuclear red hotdog all the way with mustard, onions, chili and slaw. The hotdogs are grilled or boiled. The hand-cut fries and my dog were both very good. I topped off the meal with an excellent Mountain Dew Special, which is Dew, cherry juice and three whole cherries. In the evenings after 4:00pm the Airport Drive-In starts their carhop service. The Drive-In is open Monday-Saturday from 5:00am to 10:00pm. Enjoy! Their Daily Specials Monday Beef stew, cream potatoes and coleslaw Tuesday Pinto beans, coleslaw and hushpuppies Wednesday Fried or baked chicken, cabbage, rice and gravy Thursday Meatloaf, cream potatoes and coleslaw Friday Spaghetti, tossed salad and garlic bread
