From the outside you will see a yellow brick building with a tiny Tony’s ice cream sign. Inside you will find an
amazing vintage 1947 era pink and green neon clock. The original booths are covered in red vinyl. And, an original fully stocked
1960’s two-sided slide top ice cream freezer with the light up sign hides off to the side. The kids that grew up in
the 60’s and 70’s should remember this freezer. The heavy metal and glass doors are also original. There is also
a great long stainless steel counter in the middle of the shop. On one side of the counter you order your food and on the
other you order your ice cream. Left side for ice cream and right side for food. I was there for the ice cream. Well, I was
there for the ice cream that goes into a milkshake that is. Tony’s puts three scoops of their ice cream in every milk-shake.
My vanilla milk-shake had a great real vanilla flavor. Its con-sistency resembled that of a lumpy cloud. Your straw was
useless it was too thick. In that retro freezer you will find pints and half gallons for purchase. And yes, Tony’s
does make their own ice cream. The factory is right beside the ice cream shop. The ice cream shop opened in 1947, but the
Coletta family started making ice cream in Gastonia in 1915. Tony’s is also a great place to bring the kids. Tony’s
gives out free child size cones to the kids every Tuesday. I never knew ice cream cones came in that size.
