Cattleman’s Steakhouse is the oldest continuously operating restaurant
in Oklahoma City (since 1910). Cattleman’s regulars are ranchers, cowboys, farmers and cattlehaulers. These folks tend
to the cattle from their birth to the butcher. So, they know their steaks and they won’t settle for just any old steak,
they want a Cattleman’s steak. Cattleman’s steaks are hand cut in their own butcher shop. They are never frozen.
The steaks are cooked over a sharp hot flame from real charcoal. When your steak meets your plate, they will ask you to cut
into it to see if it is cooked the way you like it. Before my steak came, I had a shrimp cocktail for an appetizer. The shrimp
and the sauce were excellent! Another excellent thing that I app-reciated was that they gave me more cocktail sauce than I
could ever use. This is a big thing for me because most of the places I have been to that serve shrimp never give you enough
sauce. It always seemed like it was a big deal for them to bring you that extra sauce. As I said, Cattleman’s gave me
more cocktail sauce than I could ever use and the sauce had an excellent, but not overpowering, amount of fresh
horse-radish in it. I loved it. My steak was the T-bone. Mine was perfectly cooked. I usually have my steaks cooked medium-well.
My steak was so tender, I didn’t need a steak knife, nor did I need any steak sauce. The T-bone steaks own juices made
for the perfect sauce. And to compliment the steak was a great salad with the house dressing, an excellent side of mashed
potatoes, and real butter for the bread. I used my bread to soak up all the remaining juices from my steak. Cattleman’s
is an amazing place. You can have breakfast with real cowboys. Where else can you do that? Cattleman’s was won in a
dice game with a hard six. They have two great red leather wraparound "Mafia" booths. The entrance has longhorn
cattle door handles. And its just a few blocks away from the Oklahoma National Stockyards, the largest stocker feeder cattle
market on the globe. And they have a great vintage neon sign too! I love this place. Note: The "Revised"
2005 Roadfood guide omitted the fact that Cattleman’s does indeed have mashed potatoes and real butter.
