If a Q house doesn't pit-cook its pork over wood coals then you will most likely find a Kook Rite Kooker in place of the pit. The Nunnery-Freeman duo in Henderson, North Carolina invented the now famous Kook Rite Kooker. The Kook Rite is an electric cooker with a hickory wood insert. This Nunnery-Freeman Q house, on Norlina Road, has been around for fifteen years, but it's not the original location. The incredibly non-descript building, once a fast food restaurant, is not much to look @. That is why there are no photos of it. I would have preferred a more shackish-like building. But, building aside, these folks really know what they are doing. I ordered a pork plate and a sweet ice tea. The plate comes with chopped Q already sauced, a basket of hushpuppies and slaw. The Q and the slaw come in a paper boat, half Q and half slaw. My nicely sweet green and white cabbage slaw was excellent. My freshly brewed sweet tea was perfect. My chopped Q, with its vinegar and spice based sauce, was glorious. And my lightly fried, shrimp shaped hushpuppies were simply superb. This excellent Q house is just off I-85. If you are southbound on I-85 take exit 215. At the top of the ramp take a left, go over the overpass, keep going strait and you will see Nunnery-Freeman BBQ at the end of the street. Enjoy!
